📖 What is EWS Certificate?
The Economically Weaker Section (EWS) Certificate, officially known as the Income and Asset Certificate, is issued to eligible citizens belonging to the General Category who are not covered under SC, ST, or OBC reservations.
The Government of India introduced a 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections through the 103rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2019. This reservation is applicable in Government Jobs and Higher Educational Institutions.
The objective of EWS reservation is to provide equal opportunities to economically disadvantaged individuals who do not belong to existing reserved categories.
🏛 History of EWS Reservation in India
Before 2019, reservations in India were primarily based on social and educational backwardness. The Constitution (103rd Amendment) Act, 2019 introduced a new reservation category based on economic conditions.
This amendment inserted Articles 15(6) and 16(6) into the Constitution, allowing the Government to provide up to 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections of society.
The EWS quota has significantly increased opportunities for financially weaker candidates from the General Category seeking admission and government employment.
